Love is in the Hair
Art and Science are fused to create a sanctuary for those who have lost their hair
Many of us have read about the innovations and leading-edge technology that has been developed by Cam Toutounghi at The Hair Clinic on Crescent St. but nothing prepared me for the world of beauty and style, passion and compassion, that awaited me inside. Row upon row of beautiful wigs with any number of hair styles immediately caught my attention and made it difficult to focus on the task at hand – the interview!
Once I recovered from the sheer beauty of it all I asked Cam how he got into this métier. Turns out that an experience close to home made him switch gears and decide to focus on hair loss after his studies in Medicine at McGill University. Cam then spent 14 years working at Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in Oncology and hair loss research.
Cam founded The Hair Clinic in 1995, which he describes as “a place which is the fusion of the art and science of hair replacement,” and he hasn’t looked back since. The Hair Clinic offers a full-service, compassionate experience with Oncology associates for those that have lost their hair due to chemo. “My clients need compassion and understanding”, says Cam. “My goal is to help my clients regain the confidence they lost through chemo hair loss by restoring their beauty.” Some of the services provided by Cam and his wonderful staff are, hair replacement, hair extensions, wig selection
Paola, an exalted client, happily explains during an impromptu phone call, that her recent experience has left her feeling fantastic, “I feel like a new person, like I was before I had cancer.” Paola’s carefully chosen wig was styled by Cam himself and she expressed her sincere gratitude and appreciation for Cam and The Hair Clinic. “I feel fabulous again!” So how does one go about getting a wig? The process is a unique, full- service system of steps that are initialized before hair loss all the way through to the post chemo regrowth. The first step is when the wig is carefully chosen by The Hair Clinic’s savvy staff. Then Cam applies a studied technique of “Visagisme” that guarantees the best suited style, shape and hair color for the client. Then the wig will be artfully styled and cut by Cam. The last step is when the client tries on the wig and the final touches are made.
Continuously developing new ways of making us look beautiful, Cam has designed a new fusion based hair replacement system that is virtually invisible and completely breathable called the Omicron One Micro Polymer Lattice. This system allows new hair to be integrated with your own seamlessly.
Cam recently also wrote his own protocol to treat cancer, which will avoid chemotherapy, entitled Glucotherapy. His protocol was accepted and will be worked on by world class medical researchers, Dr. Mark Basik and Dr. Michael Pollak once funding has been achieved. Dr Michael Pollak holds the Alexander Goldfarb Research Chair in cancer research at McGill University and Dr. Mark Basik is a surgical oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and is the Medical Director of the inter-disciplinary Breast Cancer Team.
The Hair Clinic – La Clinique Capillaire is located at 2070 Crescent St., just below Sherbrooke. The Hair Clinic has a surface area of 2500 square feet, and offers a selection of over 1200 wigs in stock.
